Frequently Asked Questions

Q) Is this a pay for play site?
A) No, there is no charge for access to any part of our site. The original intent of the World Wide Web was the sharing of information and resources and we try very hard to retain that spirit.

Q) Why do you have so many old DOS and Windows programs and utilities?
A) The GIFfer was started up as file sharing BBS in 1988, primarialy as a vehicle for ASP (Association of Shareware Professionals) members to distribute their work. Many of those old programs and utilities are still usefull, so we have decided to leave them on the site for people that are looking for programs that will work on their old DOS and Windows 3.x systems.

Q) Are there any, any more of or where can I find pictures of whoever?
A) Don't even bother asking. After looking at a few hundred thousand of the pictures they all started to look alike to me and if they are here, I probably don't have any better clue as to where they are located than you do. I most likely won't even respond to your e-mail.

Q) Will you please e-mail me whatever?
A) As a general rule, I don't respond to individual requests for stories, pictures or other files sent via e-mail.

Q) Why can't I see the pictures when I click on them?
A) We use secondary pop-up windows to display pictures. In order for them to display properly in your browser you must:

      1) Enable pop-up's in your browser.
      2) Enable JAVA scripts in your browser.

The easiest, and quickest, way to ensure that you won't have any problems with viewing every area of our site is to add http://www.giffer.com to your web browsers "Trusted Sites" list. I realize that doing so is a leap of faith, but you will eventually realize that we are not one of those sites that tries to slip a trojan or virus into your system via some destructive java script or any other method. That just goes against everything we stand for.

We realize that any of these actions can be dangerous when visiting other sites, so we also recommend that you use a Web browser that allows you to enable pop-up's and JAVA scripts on a site by site basis. FireFox is the best one that we have found and it will run on most platforms. You can find more information about FireFox and other usefull programs on our Handy Utilities page.

Q) Can I upload files to your site?
A) Yes you can. Simply FTP them to giffer.com and I will review them and post them if they appear to be OK. Feel free to upload anything but child porn, beastiality or commercial programs. If you upload child porn I am obligated to report it, along with your IP address, to the local law enforcement authorities.

You can log on to our FTP site using a userid of "Anonymous" and your e-mail address as the password. Don't worry, we won't share your e-mail address with anyone or use it for any purpose other than to contact you if there is a problem with your upload(s).

If you can't connect to our FTP server or can't see any of the upload/download directories, try changing the Transfer Mode setting in your FTP client from Passive to Active (Edit>Settings in most FTP clients) before complaining or asking us for assistance. An incorrect Transfer Mode setting or the Windows firewall is the problem 99% of the time. Try turning your firewall off before starting your FTP session and then turn it back on after you finish your FTP session.

Q) Do you mind if I create a link to your site?
A) Yes, I do mind and prefer that you don't create a link to my site. I don't make any money off of my site, so I don't see why you should either.

Q) Will you create a link to my site?
A) Keeping a links page up-to-date is too much of a pain and I have no control over what you put on your own pages. So, no, I won't create a link to your site.
